Web Site Purpose, Content & Safety Policy
Web
Site Checklist
- Software and Hardware
- School Web sites are required to use the
following software unless otherwise approved.
- Editor: MS FrontPage
- CGI: Active Server Pages using Visual
Basic. (Schools
are not allowed to use VB script or
other server side scripts if the web site is on the district web
server.
- Microsoft Internet Information Server (No
version of Unix or Apache or Linux)
- School Web sites are required to be housed on the
district's web server or on a district-owned server meeting
district requirements and specifications, unless otherwise
approved.
- District staff shall have full
administrative rights to any server located on a school
campus.
- District approval for a unix-based
web server can be obtained under certain conditions.
- FTP (port 21) and HTTP (port 80)
are the only acceptable protocols for access from outside the
district firewall.
- SSL (port 443) may be used upon
district approval.
- Macromedia Shockwave/Flash may be used in web
site development as long as there is an option for the user to
view the content without downloading/using the plug-in.

- All pages and links screened for content
prior to posting, by principal or designee
- For booster or support groups wishing to maintain a web site
in support of a school program:
- Webmaster of support web-sites will sign an agreement that
their web pages will conform to IUSD Web Site Policies in
return for a link on the school web site.
- On the page being linked from the IUSD School web site,
there will be a means for viewers to report non-conforming
practices.
- In small font at the bottom of the page: "This web page (site) is designed to support (name of
activity) at (name of school) and the school has . We also
support the IUSD policies regarding web sites. Any concerns
about the content of these pages can be forwarded to (name
of school (e-mail address linked))."
- Link will be deleted if the agreement is violated.

there is only one version of the information.

- Avoid counters (that take up real estate)
- Common header and footer across all pages
- Common background color or theme across all pages
- Except for documents at the end of the web, include link back
to home page
- Home page design avoids extensive scrolling and/or extensive
animation
- Home page includes school logo
- Minimal graphics and/or frames so that page load times under
15 seconds on standard home 28.8 modem; rule of thumb: do not
exceed 100k per page.
- Graphics should not exceed 24k
- Long documents include linked table of contents and
return-to-top links
- Include last updated date at the bottom of each page
- Documents must be in html or pdf format
- Documents must be in html or pdf format or in Microsoft Office
document format.
- Structure: Each school's
web site is deliberately structured around major site elements

- Space allocated to each school on IUSD Web Server for School
web site development, limited to 50 Mg. Schools needing to
exceed this limit shall install their own web server.
- Schools may have own web server under prescribed
conditions.
- Use MS FrontPage publishing capacities
- Web Page Creation/Editing
- Microsoft FrontPage 2000, preferred editor, est $65 (MS
FrontPage Express, free)
- Clip Art Web Sites
- Save in Adobe .pdf file format
- Have Publication Services save your Word or
Excel Document in pdf format
- FTP the file to your web site, and create a
link to it.
- Remind your users that this is a pdf file
- Provide convenient access to download Adobe's
Acrobat Reader (free)
- Graphics
- Compression: Use FrontPage capabilities
